  1. Sniff...I miss Finland too!!!! I have been trying to talk my husband into going to Maine for a cross country skiing and snowshoeing trip. We live in Massachusetts and there is absolutely no snow here this winter. It has been an unusually warm winter. I try so hard to introduce all the wonderful winter sports to my kids here in the U.S. like skiing and skating, but it is so hard when such things are not part of the school curriculum like they are in Finland. I'm originally from the Finnish Lapland and I used to ski to school over a frozen river in the winter time on days when we had skiing in gym class. It's been 7 years since I crosscountry skied. My kids have never tried it (only downhill skiing). Enjoy all those wonderful winter sports in the beauty of Finland's nature. Oh, and nature makes me think of all the flavorful berries you are going to enjoy this summer. Can you tell I'm homesick!?

    1. Hi Jonna,

We live in Chicago where it gets cold, but we don't always have snow. What I've learned from living here is that if you have snow outside, winter is much more fun. If it is always snowing and melting like in Chicago, it's not so much fun. We have had so much fun with all the outdoor winter sports. We have access to all of the same sports at home, but it is not so easy because there isn't always snow. I can't wait to go berry picking, but our Finnish friend here tells us we might be returning home before they ripen :(

  2. Oh, this really pulls at my heart--I would LOVE to be skiing with you guys! How did YOU like it? We got a little bit of snow last night, but not enough to ski :( We've only had two skiable snow this year so far. I'm going to look at the weather map and see if the northern suburbs got more snow--I might be heading out in search of white trails.

  3. Hei, you look so professional! But why your eldest is always without a beanie? In any weather.
Actually I shouldn't be asking this question. because when I was his age and older I used to stash my beanie in the mailbox when I went out -- so my parents never knew how I went around whereas you do ;)
Where did you find this beautiful Finnish forrest? It always lights my heart.

    1. LOL! My oldest son is ALWAYS boiling hot. His metabolism runs FAST. He runs FAST. It is one of those fights I have chosen not to take on with my eldest!

This forest is called Paloheina. It is just north of City Center (about 20 minutes on bus). We were able to rent skis there. It was dark daylight when I took these photos and it was snowing quite hard, but yes...VERY beautiful.
